Every day, Hoosiers take their automobiles for granted. Our vehicles undoubtedly make modern life more convenient, but they also cause a lot of injuries. If you’ve been hurt in a collision, the effects can reach all corners of your life. In addition to your own physical well-being, you may find yourself worrying about medical bills, transportation, and work and family obligations. It is without a doubt that car collisions are stressful.

This isn’t a fun phone call, but it’s one that needs to be made.

Following an auto collision, there are several things you can do to make things easier on yourself. One of the first and most important things you should remember is to make sure that the police file a report.

This is a good idea, even if you think the crash was a minor one. If you’ve suffered no injuries and the damage to your vehicle is barely visible, you might be tempted to avoid police involvement altogether. Do not surrender to this temptation.

Sometimes aches and pains related to the collision don’t present themselves until after your adrenaline rush has subsided. What happens when you realize four hours after the fact that your neck isn’t feeling quite right? It’s always better to have documentation and not need it than to need it and not have it. Plus, excitement, fear and stress have a way of clouding judgment and distorting memory. The police will collect and record details related to the incident that might otherwise be lost to time or frayed nerves.

A contemporaneous police report can be very helpful in accurately conveying the details of a crash. Always be cordial and polite to the responding officer, and if you can, TAKE PHOTOS of the vehicles involved and the damage they’ve sustained.
